Product Management Support

Helping your organisation to develop a product-led approach to technology delivery

a very white, futuristic, abstract pathway, against a blue sky

Technology solutions have become more and more complex, offering many possibilities for development. It’s no longer enough to simply purchase your database or website software and configure it, these tools need to be customised and integrated to maximise their impact and ROI.

Product management is a skillset, requiring needs analysis, stakeholder and vendor engagement, technical know-how, and vision.

A product manager holds the strategic responsibility for the vision and direction of a product, leading the product team (which might include developers, UX designers, business analysts, data specialists, etc.) and working to make sure the product is developed to deliver maximum value.

A product-led organisation puts the product experience at the centre, seeking to deliver on the needs of users in a simple, intuitive, and enjoyable way. It iterates product development based on real need and maintains a constant communication with users about their experience.

It recognises that the power of an ecosystem of tools is driven by the points of integration, and seeks to give a more complete and fulfilling experience that takes full advantage of all the available data, driving opportunities for engagement that will help users to achieve their goals.

Whether you are building a website from scratch or configuring a customisable CRM such as Salesforce, you are creating products for your users and supporters, and organisations that take a product-led approach to this work are on the pathway to long-term success.

Having built a product-led engagement systems function at Greenpeace International, serving the whole global network, I have the knowledge and experience to help you develop or refine this methodology for your organisation, and specifically for the non-profit context.

This could include:

  • A review of the current approach to managing technology tools and staffing with guidance on how best to move towards becoming a product-led organisation within your scale and context

  • A “product complexity” review to assess the current products in use and how they should best be staffed for success

  • Mentorship and support of up-and-coming product managers

  • Training in the principles and practice of taking a product-led approach to delivering technology, including agile product development (Scrum)

  • Feature adoption review - assessing how well your products are used. Helping to define user satisfaction and ROI for your technology budget

  • Coaching in agile software development, including agile at scale

  • Providing senior Product Management coverage, i.e. setting the overall direction of the product suite and co-ordinating strategy

  • Guidance and support on product development best practice, e.g. features-based development, Minimum Lovable Product, “event-storming” workshops, etc.

  • Guidance and support on developing a community management approach for developing products inclusively
